Day 1 of 4
Arrival at Vientiane and transfer to your hotel to relax. Overnight in Vientiane.
Vientiane's Wattay Airport is small with quick transfers. Confirm arrival time so the next day's train (fixed 15:30 departure) is comfortably catchable.
Day 2 of 4
City tour of Vientiane: the oldest temple Wat Sisaket (thousands of miniature Buddha statues), the former royal temple Wat Prakeo (once home to the Emerald Buddha), the sacred That Luang Stupa and the Patuxai Monument (Vientiane's Arc de Triomphe).
13:50 transfer to the train station (13 km, ~25 min). 15:30 depart by high-speed train to Luang Prabang, arriving 18:05 and transfer to hotel. Overnight in Luang Prabang.
Laos-China Railway tickets are tight in peak season and sold close to departure; book early. Passport required at the station. Allow the 1-hour check-in buffer.
Day 3 of 4
Optional early alms-giving ritual with saffron-clad monks. Guided tour of Wat Sene and the magnificent Wat Xiengthong, the Royal Palace Museum and the Arts and Ethnology Centre. Drive to the Kuang Si Waterfall (turquoise pools, optional Free the Bears sanctuary). Climb Mount Phousi for sunset over the Mekong, ending at the Night Market.
Overnight in Luang Prabang.
Brief clients on alms-giving etiquette (keep distance, no flash, dress modestly). Pack swimwear for Kuang Si; Mount Phousi is ~330 steps.
Day 4 of 4
Morning Mekong River cruise to the Pak Ou Caves, two linked caves filled with thousands of gold-lacquered Buddha statues. Transfer to the airport for your departure flight.
Time the cruise against the flight; allow a buffer for the river return. Luang Prabang Airport is compact, 15 min from town.
